I’ll answer a few more later, and feel free to chime in with additional questions if you have them.
1. I seldom decide to attend a con far enough in advance to sign up for programming. I did give a very well received panel on copyediting at WisCon a few years ago, though, and was invited to do another any year. I enjoyed giving that panel and would be happy to do more. I haven’t yet decided what cons or receptions to attend this year, though, if any.
2. One of my favorite bedtime stories for my kids is No Matter What.
3. The biggest mistake I made with the hurricanes last year was evacuating to Tampa for the last one. (My husband was deployed to Iraq, and I had to do the evacuation with the kids and pets myself.) The ‘cane was supposed to miss Tampa by a long shot, but it followed us and hit the hotel we were in. The restaurant closed down and there was no food for the kids, and water came through our windows (which at least remained unbroken, unlike many others at the hotel). This was one of the few hotels that accepted pets, and the wet carpet reeked so badly of dog piss that I could barely breathe in the room. It was altogether an incredibly awful experience. I think the weather folks are decent at predicting where the ‘canes will make landfall, but after that it’s anyone’s guess where they’ll go. This year I plan on evacuating farther inland and being sure I have plenty of food and water in the car even if I think it will be available where I’m going.
4. Military culture in general is very conservative, and I am not. If there is a culture of military wives, I’ve never attempted to be a part of it. I don’t like military life and am sure I’m a lousy officer’s wife.
5. Because I edit for a living and seldom work outside of SF/F, which is what I enjoy and get pleasure out of, I seldom–once every few years, perhaps–read anything strictly for pleasure. When I do, it is inevitably a novel rather than a short. I am a serious news junkie and read all the major news sites, though I doubt that counts as pleasure reading. :-)

About
I'm a freelance copyeditor specializing in fantasy and science fiction. SF/F novels I have copyedited have been finalists for (and have sometimes won) the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke, Endeavour, Golden Spur, John W. Campbell Memorial, Quill, Locus, Philip K. Dick, British Science Fiction, British Fantasy, and World Fantasy awards. In 2007 I became the first and only copyeditor ever short-listed for a World Fantasy Award.

Let me put the seed for a double-con in your head. World Fantasy Con is in Madison, Wisconsin in November and Windycon is in Chicago a week later. The Windycon hotel rate kicks in on the Tuesday between the cons, so you can stay inexpensively ($71/night) and do the tourist thing in Chicago between cons. And I’ll even use you on programming.
This year I plan on evacuating farther inland
This year I plan on no hurricanes making a direct hit.
Denial? Me? Good heavens, no.
Thank you so much for the offer, Steve. I think back-to-back cons would do me in, though! I’m pretty much a zombie after one. :-)
I do want to keep WFC in mind this year, though. I’ve never attended and would really like to.
Best,
Deanna
Heh. I thought about that when I replied. I don’t feel so hopeful, though. :-)
And of course today we get that forecasters are predicting an active hurricane season: http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/05/16/hurricane.outlook/index.html
*sigh*
