Crawling toward the finish line

I just passed 85,000 words on my novel. It would sure be nice if it would pick up to that “all downhill” point I hear of from so many other writers, but instead I feel like I’m nearing the end of a marathon and am stumbling and gasping for breath. Damned if I’m not going to finish, but man is getting there ever hard.

I never get a dowhill. I always feel like I need a blood transfusion to help me through the big finish.

    Deanna,

I don’t get a downhill sprint either. Both novels that I’ve finished have fought me at the end. I envy the people who get the big rush to the end. Not all of us are that lucky, alas.

I’m at the same stage. That’s exactly how I feel! *pantpant*

I’m so glad to hear I’m not the only one!

It’s really good to know that it’s not just me. I was feeling doomed because it seems so different for so many people.

Thank you for saying so. :-) I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s having a tough time by the end.

What is this mysterious “downhill sprint” you speak of?

Finishing a book is like moving closer and closer to the speed of light. It just gets more massive and you need even more energy to keep it accellerating.

I can only do it by taking a week off and going somewhere very quiet and doing nothing but writing.

A week of quiet to write sounds heavenly. :-) I do plan at least a weekend for myself at a hotel, soon. I think I could finish the rough with that.

Though I’m getting closer each day now! Maybe I’ll get the rough done before then and can use the hotel weekend to revise. Editing, man. I can’t wait to get to the editing. :-)
