Your process is quite a bit like my own! I'm very anal about my writing, about the characters and the world I've created.

Thanks for this, it's fabulous stuff, though I've found it very late. I deeply appreciate the incite into copyediting from your side of the process. Note me down as another author who sings the praises of good copyeditors.

My own copyeditors on the WebMage series are absolutely wonderful and I have gratefully added them to my acknowledgments (which they fixed from acknowledgements, btw). I'm going to post a link to this post from my writers group blog at wyrdsmiths.blogspot.

[...] However, it is harder to see italics in Courier than it is in Times. Also, copyeditors don’t get to make the rules, and if we tell the production departments their rules are unnecessary, we’re unlikely to get further work from them. Please underline instead of using italics. Believe me, we have many more important things to do to your manuscript than spend our time drawing lines under words. [...]

The author who looked up ship in the thesaurus -- were his initials DLM? Because I've copy-edited that guy too, and I should have gotten combat pay.

Hi! Yeah, there's definitely a certain type who is drawn to this line of work. :-) And friend away, of course.

Just found your LJ through a friends list. Should I be concerned that I read this post and thought it sounded like something I'd really enjoy? I found it really interesting that in an earlier comment you mentioned slowing down your reading by touching each word with a pencil. When I'm editing my own work, doing something like that is the only way I can separate myself from my own intentions and look at what I actally wrote. Mind if I friend you?
