Bizarre dreams
Published by Deanna Hoak October 27th, 2005 in blogI had very weird stress dreams about copyediting last night. First, I dreamed that I had taken on way too many projects to complete in time. (I’m very careful not to do that. I actually turn down more projects than I accept because I’ve never missed a deadline and don’t intend to.) Second, some of the projects weren’t even really just copyediting, but the author (none of the authors or editors in this dream were actual people I know) wanted me to do all this extra stuff while I was copyediting–like, um, apartment-sit and make homemade food for her dog. It was very fucking strange. And then I ended up in this tree with some other chick I don’t know, and she let go and took a swan dive into the ground and died.
I’m not actually in a very good mood this morning….

I'm a freelance copyeditor specializing in fantasy and science fiction. SF/F novels I have copyedited have been finalists for (and have sometimes won) the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke, Golden Spur, John W. Campbell Memorial, Quill, Locus, Philip K. Dick, British Science Fiction, British Fantasy, and World Fantasy awards. In 2007 I was short-listed for a World Fantasy Award for my copyediting.

Eeeee!
BTW, do you ever do copyediting for Ace?
Well, since I woke up to such a plethora of good things to read on my flist this morning, I’ll let my icon hopefully put a smile on your face. (well, I didn’t make the icon, but you get the drift).
I passed Ace’s copyediting test with flying colors several years ago, but I’ve never done any work for them. They might hire me on an author request, though I don’t know. (My rate is slightly higher than the “base” most publishers start at. Most publishers don’t have a problem with it, but a few, like Bantam, will only hire me if the author requests me by name.)
Thanks. :-)
Hm … assuming my agent sells the novel on his desk, I was planning to request you as a copy editor. I’ll make a note to go elsewhere for homemade dog food, though.
:-D Thank you, on both counts. I’m sure I’d be delighted to copyedit your book.
I’ve been doing some freelance proofreading/copyediting for a local small press, and getting a lot of really great feedback for it so that I would like to expand to other publishers. I’ve been sending letters and resumes cold, and not getting any response. Do you have any suggestions for how I can make a stronger first impression?
You might try looking at some of your favorite books to see who publishes them, and then calling the publisher directly and asking to speak to the person who hires freelancers. That way you’ll be able to offer your references right off the bat.
Sometimes the subconscious attaches a new or unknown stressor to something familiar in order to express it and/or release the stress. It sounds to me as if your sphere of control has shifted, or you feel inwardly that something is threatening your sphere of control.

( I work on nuclear reactors for a living WTF do I *really* know?! ;) )
How do you go about taking that test?
Hmm. That’s interesting. I’ll have to think about that.
Thanks. That’s bold. I’ll try it.
Look up Ace’s phone number, and call and ask for the person who hires freelancers. (Sorry–I don’t remember who.) They’ll send it to you.
I actually had a dream about a month ago—a variant, I suppose, on the classic nightmare of being in class and not having done the assignment—where someone called me up asking where a copy editing assignment was, and I suddenly realized I’d totally spaced out, and there was a job I’d forgotten all about and hadn’t even started…
As for dog food and such, we don’t actually have to do that for some authors; it just seems that way sometimes…
Now that dream I’m familiar with. At least once a year I dream that I took a project and then forgot about it until the day before the due date. This twist was new, though. :-)
I hate when dreams put me in a fucked-up mood.
Speaking of which, here is some art I made…

Gotta love what the brain does when we’re asleep. The last one I remember well involved a guy on my flist, two people I don’t know but who were clearly friends of his in the dream, a cabin in the woods, and playing card. Never really did figure that one out.
Hope your day got better.
Wow, I love that, Billy. Very cool!
Does that photo hosting site work pretty well?
Ehh. It was okay.
Well, here’s to a better day and better dreams. Take care!
Thanks!
It was the first time I painted.
It’s really just a paper mock-up. I think I’ll paint something like it on canvas soon.
I also just painted a surreal landscape kinda thing, which is not so, uh…Disturbed.
Yeah, that’s a great site for photos! Lots of space!
