Cooking with Kids
Published by Deanna Hoak November 23rd, 2005 in blogMe: Evan, no! No, the collard greens do not go in the pecan pie! Yuck!
Blaine (later, as Evan wields a potato peeler in her direction): Evan, no!! Do not cut my nose off!
I hope you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving. :-)

My mother has a pair of photos in a diptych holder in the living room. On one side is her with a bowl of brownie batter, with myself (age 9) and my brother (age 3) gleefully sticking our hands in the bowl. On the other side is her with a bowl of cake batter, with myself (age 26) and my brother (age 20) gleefully sticking our hands in the bowl. Some things never change, and it is perfect and right that it should be so. *)
I am making your recipe for cranberries right now. Yum! And it’s all for me as my husband can’t stand cranberries. His loss.
:-) They’re great hot or cold. I hope you enjoy them!
Heh. My other comment for the evening was to Blaine, as she liked pie batter off her fingers: “Honey, that has raw eggs in it. You really shouldn’t eat it.”
(But I grew up eating it too, and though I warned her, I didn’t actually stop her. Bad mom, me. :-))
*snicker* I expected the first line to read, “Even, no! The collard greens do not belong down the disposal!”

You know, I don’t think I learned about salmonella in raw eggs until after I’d gone through far too many years of eating raw chocolate chip cookie dough and pancake batter with no ill effects. My first emotion upon reading about the dangers of raw eggs was pure incrredulity. (g)

Yeah, me too.
And that should read “licked,” BTW, though she liked it, too. ;-)
*giggles!*
I should probably say a hearty prayer of thanks for our Food and Drug Administration for ensuring that children in this country can pretty much indulge themselves raw dough with a high degree of safety. (g)
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Happy Thanksgiving, Deanna. :)
Yes, it was much the same when I was growing up. 27 years later, I’m salmonella-free!
(To quote , “Sal? Sal Monella? I think I went to high school with him….”)
Happy Thanksgiving, D! Mmmm, to anything sauteeing in butter!!
Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!
Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!
I hope you and yours have a wonderful one, too!
So how did you like them? Were they a hit? This recipe has been known to convert some severe cranberry haters…. :-)
I put a little too much brandy into it. The only cranberries I could find were prepackaged in 12 ounce bags and I put the full amount of brandy in and a bit of a splash. After a day in the ‘frige, the sharpness left and it was (and still is) quite yummy. The non-cranberry part of the household ate a little, but he just doesn’t care for tart as a taste. His loss!
This makes a splendid spread on a turkey sandwich (with a little sharp mustard)!
Thanks for sharing.
