Birthday Con

Update: I messed up the first one of these. Please vote again if you did already…:-)

Hey, y’all!

As I’ve noted before, I’m turning the big four-oh this year. I’m rather dreading it. :-)

However, 40 deserves a celebration, and since most of my best friends are in the industry, I’d like to have a party at a con. I’ve heard ReaderCon is a great convention, and it’s the weekend of my birthday, which is nice. WorldCon is about six weeks after, which is pushing it, but I could probably get away with a celebration then. I’d like to attend WFC, but I’d have to have some kind of “being 40” party instead of a birthday party if I did that one. :-)

But a party’s not much fun without friends, so what I really need to know is who is going to what cons, and if you might be interested in attending a birthday party if I arranged it. (And I know it’s odd to be arranging one’s own birthday party, but alas I don’t know how else to go about it. :-))

So fill in the poll below if you’d be interested in coming, or offer further suggestions in the comments. Or if you can’t fill out the poll or can’t leave your name on it, you can always drop me a line at deannahoak (at) livejournal.com.

And of course if you have party suggestions, let me know. I’ve never organized a party before. :-)

I don’t know whether I’ll be going to WorldCon or WFC, but either is a possibility. Happy planning!

40 is the new 30. Don’t stress about it!

    Come to the Nebula awards!

Much better now. Oh, and Wiscon again. (Readercon is a definite, WFC a maybe.)

    Also: Wiscon.

WFC isn’t 100% definite, but I’m hopeful with good reason.

Well, you don’t exactly know me yet, and I’m unlikely to get further West than Dublin this year, so no suggestions, but I did want to mention that I’m using your post on Helping Your Copyeditor to aid in tidying up my short story for Leaf Books.

    Thanks for that.

    :-) You’re welcome.

I’ll be at WFC, and regardless of when you hold your party, if I find you there, I’ll still wish you a happy birthday — and then give you directions to Toy Joy in Austin, because no grammarian’s desk is complete without a Ninja Thrower. Or possibly a Librarian Action Figure, or maybe a string of chinese lights. Toy Joy is the toy store for adults — we go in, get lost for two hours, and wander out again, blinking at the bright light in the big room and wonder how we’d regressed to kid-status and then we wonder how we’d made it so long without that experience.

I’d suggest Kerbey Lane for a celebration place if you were to do it in Austin, but then, how can you resist any restaurant that has PancakesTheSizeOfYourHead?

Turning 40 has turned out to be a great thing for me. As the decorations at my party so truly stated, “LIfe begins at 40!” That always sounded trite, but it is seemingly very true.

    Since I’m not a con person, I can’t vote.

In my experience, the lead up to forty is much worse than the after-forty. Once it’s over, it ain’t all that much. :-)`

Let me add my voice to those recommending Wiscon.

(Of course, if you don’t already have a membership it’s too late for this year…)

    Alas, I don’t have a membership. :-)

I’ll be at WorldCon, and it’ll be the first big con I’ve ever attended. If I see you there, I will try to subvert my introversion long enough to thank you in person for all the helpful posts you’ve made. :)

I never know what I’m doing from week to week, let alone this July (which isn’t even that far away…). But I’ve been to ReaderCon a bunch of times and found it the most enjoyable, in general, of the cons I’ve been to…
