My boyfriend isn’t usually dyslexic but has been feeling that way because of his not being well acting in collusion with some major stresses in his life right now. This would be worrisome but not such a big worry if it weren’t for the nature of the PhD he is in the midst of — it involves looking at strings of DNA half the day long, switch your letters about there…

We all do that. :-)

I get aggravated with copyeditors and proofreaders who are pissy and condescending about other people’s typos; I can only think that they haven’t written very damn much.

I have many sayings that I live by in my work. (Perhaps I’ll do a post on them one of these days.) Anyhow, one of them is, “I can proofread anything except my own copy.”

Now in these days of editing online, this gets a little more complicated. I am often responsible for delivering a file that should be clean. And I am sometimes the operator who inputs others’ corrections. But the basic point still holds: When it’s something I actually wrote, I will tend to miss mistakes. (For example, I noticed a couple typos in my long answer to your LGA post.)

I mean, when I’m wearing my writer hat, then others are supposed to cover for me…I try to keep my copy as neat as possible, but I don’t agonize over it–unless it’s a letter soliciting work as a proofreader…

I was just having a conversation with someone on the topic of sleep\dreaming and conscious perceptions. It is amazing what out unconscious minds perceive during the day and play back for us while we sleep. Unfortunately for me, my unconscious mind is just as dyslexic as my conscious.

I used to do that when I was in college. I would have dreams about editing my papers, and upon waking the next morning and firing up the computer, I would find those same mistakes.
