[...] When I made my post “Understanding Your Copyedited Manuscript” about a month ago, several people noted that the information would be much easier to understand if illustrated. Since I obviously can’t post someone’s actual manuscript up on my website (and since it’s highly unlikely there would be enough marks in a few pages to be useful anyway), I needed to write up enough information to be illuminating, mark it up, scan it in, and post it. I did so and incorporated as much useful information as possible into two pages. [...]

Thank you all.

Rafe: I started out editing college textbooks. I'd always loved SF/F, though, and I made the move over as soon as I could.<a href="http://deannahoak.com/2006/04/20/my-start-in-publishing/" rel="nofollow"> I discussed my start in publishing in this post.</a>

Jess: The only real way I could provide any copyedited manuscript is if I wrote something with deliberate errors and then marked it up and scanned it in. I suppose I might do that sometime when I get a chance.

A legend is a nice start, but what I really mean is a few pages of copy-edited manuscript, maybe with examples of a couple keymarks.

Jpatrick: A quick googling returns some good examples (admittedly, in black & white... your imagination can Colorize/Turnerize them, I'm sure ;-) ) - http://www.neu.edu/styleguide/appendix_b.html

Illustrious Hostess: It's heartening to see that, despite the hideous black mark my tenure at Edit Ink represents, at least I was taught the correct way to mark up a manuscript, even though it's improbable that I'll find my way back into the field. How did you find your way to your current position, if you don't mind narrating your CV? :-)

It's difficult to find online examples, but the University of Colorado at Boulder has a useful compendium of markup symbols here:
