I’m sure all of you here read The Mumpsimus anyway, but if any of you haven’t clicked over to Matt Cheney’s essay “What Is Appropriate”–about teaching books that contain sex–I really recommend that you do so. It’s thoughtful and thought-provoking and raises issues that even people without kids should be aware of.

What a wonderful, fascinating article. Thank you for linking to it.
Marvellous to read such a thoughtful, intelligent discussion of this issue (or, rather, these issues).
My daughter should have such a teacher when she gets to that age.
Great article. Thanks for the link . . .

My Clarion West class had this discussion a while back because Clarion East had a student that was under 18. My class was all about sex and deviant behavior. I remember one night we discussed what would be appropriate for a 17 year old. I think we decided that it would depend on the 17 yo.
Teaching today is so hard as it is, but it’s even harder when parents object to what their kids are studying. I think it makes teachers afraid to touch certain subjects.
