Copyediting links
Published by Deanna Hoak March 5th, 2007 in blogI’m behind in my web searches about copyediting, but I just came across this interesting post about my profession.
Many of the comments make me cringe, because they highlight things that copyeditors just aren’t supposed to do–I suppose there’s a reason why some authors dislike the process, though I’ve been really lucky with mine. It’s nice to see a post expressing appreciation, though.
And here’s another nice post praising the skill of copyediting. I wasn’t the copyeditor for Joe Schreiber’s Eat the Dark, but whoever was–kudos to you! I’m particularly fond of this quotation from the post:
Not only do I salute this person as I do anybody who performs a very specialized and critical task that I couldn’t imagine myself performing except disasterously (imagine a clumsy and nearsighted child coloring a balloon with very sharp colored pencils, and there you have your allegory), but I salute them because they are the last in the long line of people that my story the best it can be.
(I will make a nice post sometime, btw, about why I prefer “copyeditor” to “copy editor”–complete with links to other copyeditors and publishing folks [even at CMS!] who feel the same way–but not just now. I’m swamped. Maybe next month. :-))

I'm a freelance copyeditor specializing in fantasy and science fiction. SF/F novels I have copyedited have been finalists for (and have sometimes won) the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke, Golden Spur, John W. Campbell Memorial, Quill, Locus, Philip K. Dick, British Science Fiction, British Fantasy, and World Fantasy awards. In 2007 I was short-listed for a World Fantasy Award for my copyediting.

I’m looking forward to the day I get a package from a copyeditor–I’m hoping it will be as informative as I think it will be, that I’ll be able to take it and make fewer mistakes next time…
Editing your own work is a tough one. I’m not the greatest spell checker. Word isn’t exactly that smart. I often wonder if I’m capping my chances at being discovered because I’m so imperfect.
Is that whining?
Hope you’ve been well and not too swamped. Nice to see you have some more time for posting. Can’t talk myself as I haven’t posted in quite awhile. Is your husband retired yet? Do you know where you will be moving to? I was glad to see you will be having something published. John
