Misspelled signs
Published by Deanna Hoak March 8th, 2007 in blogFor those of you who remember the long and frustrated post I made about attempting to verify the spelling of “La Guardia,” you’ll enjoy this story: After twenty years, Hagerstown, Maryland, has corrected the spelling of a town sign directing people to “Municpal Stadium.”

My family briefly lived on a street with a misspelled sign. They fixed it pretty fast, though … someone must have complained! :^)
I hadn’t read your La[]Guardia story before. I was vastly amused, and deeply sympathetic, and somewhat relieved to discover that fiction copy editors also have problems (and wild-goose chases) like this!
The street I lived on when I was a kid had a bend in it one house away. At the bend, the streat name changed to Grinstead. They put up a new sign that said Grimstead. Everyone had a fit, but the best we got was a little white paint to change the “m” to an “n”.

That’s all. Worst misspelled signs ever.
