An outsider’s perspective
Published by Deanna Hoak August 31st, 2007 in blogI’m honestly surprised that people are surprised this latest SFWA debacle has happened, but I was nonetheless complaining to a non-SF friend (his name is Josh Darcy) about how embarrassing it is, considering that you would tend to think of an SF organization as being forward-thinking. He replied with the following:
Maybe they prefer those books that tell dystopic stories of a far future where we’re all using rocks to eat and saying “Ugh.”
Heh.
Josh, btw, is writing a play that will be showing in London next month. I’ll let you know when. :-)

About
I'm a freelance copyeditor specializing in fantasy and science fiction. SF/F novels I have copyedited have been finalists for (and have sometimes won) the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke, Golden Spur, John W. Campbell Memorial, Quill, Locus, Philip K. Dick, British Science Fiction, British Fantasy, and World Fantasy awards. In 2007 I was short-listed for a World Fantasy Award for my copyediting.

I MISS YOUR POSTINGS!
You need to post more often, ma’am. :-)
Oh lord, which debacle is this one?
(I’ve taken a sanity leave from SFWA-related postings for the duration, said duration to last until further notice)
Oh, I should have linked it; I’ve fixed that.
I tend to forget a lot of us have started to ignore SFWA stuff. :-)
*facepalms*
So many good intentions, hijacked by the farkin’ clueless (if one wishes to be charitable) and implemented in the worst and most damaging way possible…
Every now and again I get the urge to run for SFWA office on the “dropkick the Nebulas, display common sense” platform, then my agent and my editor lock me in my room without ‘net connectivity until the crazies pass.
Oh geeze, I am glad you linked this.
I know, Laura Anne. It’s just discouraging. I wish I saw a way through for SFWA, but I believe people who say that they thought things could be changed until they were actually elected and realized they were wrong. Something’s just flawed there.
How relevant is SFWA? Does it really mean much of anything to editors these days? I’m not at all convinced that it does.
Thanks for the link - hope your summer went well and that is why you haven’t had much time to blog. How is your eye? Has your husband decided what to do next?
John
It really makes me want to reconsider how much of an effort I’m making to submit my writing to the “right” markets. I’d really like to be a member of the SFWA one of these days, but this kind of debacle makes it difficult to remember why.
