New life phase, checking options and looking for work
3 Comments Published by Deanna Hoak August 14th, 2008 in blogDamn, I’m behind on blogging.
LaunchPad and WorldCon were invigorating and exhausting at the same time. I have so many amazing and brilliant and accomplished friends (including some new ones now), and I left the con feeling incredibly energized. You may see my blogging increase over the next few weeks as I organize my mind and decide what to do in the future.
I’m thinking about the future particularly heavily because Evan (my youngest) goes into full-day kindergarten next week. This really signals a major life change for me, as it has been years since I had access to many uninterrupted hours at a stretch. I certainly want to accomplish things with those hours, and I’ve been analyzing where I am and what I want to do going forward. I’d like to pick up my writing again (I’ve done little with it the last few years), and I believe I’m going to seek a regular job. I love copyediting, of course, but I know it backward, forward, and inside out. I’d enjoy a new challenge. :-) I’d particularly love to move into editorial–and my author friends know that I can improve books on a level far greater than copyediting technically encompasses. I have an open mind, though, and am curious to see what positions are out there and what opportunities they might offer.
Drop me a line if you guys know of anything. And watch for further blogging. ;-)

About
I'm a freelance copyeditor specializing in fantasy and science fiction. SF/F novels I have copyedited have been finalists for (and have sometimes won) the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke, Endeavour, Golden Spur, John W. Campbell Memorial, Quill, Locus, Philip K. Dick, British Science Fiction, British Fantasy, and World Fantasy awards. In 2007 I became the first and only copyeditor ever short-listed for a World Fantasy Award.

As always, it was great talking to you at Worldcon. If I should hear about anything, I’ll let you know, and don’t forget we discussed Orbit.
I was actually excited for you, reading that you now will have uninterrupted time to work on your book or more writing, and blogging too. By now I’m sure your time management skills are excellent. Me, I don’t have kids (just a dog!) and uninterrupted time is still laughable! Freelance woes, really.
But you’re moving on to greater things. I think it takes a lot of courage to move on after such success and being comfortable, and to recognize and follow up on needing a new challenge, but I feel confident you’ll find even better and will be able to contribute even more significantly.
All the best!
Harlequin’s non-fiction imprint is looking for an associate editor. I saw it in my free Publishers Lunch.
Have a lovely day! :-)
