Me: Oh, these mushrooms are amazing with this steak!
Blaine: Actually, mushrooms are made to go with steak.
Me: They probably don’t have much in the way of nutritive value, huh?
Bill: Nah, I don’t think so. [slight pause while chewing] They do bioaccumulate cesium, though.
Snort!
ROFLMAO
Sadly, that conversation will never happen in my household. I have yet to convince my new wife that mushrooms are a good thing to eat…
actually, mushrooms are low in Saturated Fat and Sodium, and very low in Cholesterol. They are also a good source of Protein, Folate, Magnesium and Zinc, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Phosphorus, Potassium, Copper and Selenium.
(i love http://www.nutritiondata.com)
Heh. Yeah, I looked up the stats before I posted. Had to tell the story accurately, though, or it wouldn’t have been funny. :-)
I was surprised they have so much nutrition! I had always figured they were just yummy fluff. :-)
Hey there! I added you–just wanted to introduce myself. Editor/New Yorker/Con administration here. I added you because you are virtually the only other person who has Pyr as an interest. (And a quick glance made it apparent that it was for the Prometheus imprint, too!) It’s a pleasure to meet you.
You know, I studied mushroom identification for a whole semester, but I never knew this. As far as nutrients, I think Mg is the main one…
Look, all I know is that my doggies eat them in the yard and then go explosive, if you know what I mean…
Vile things, except for maybe the button ones with a steak… but IMO asparagus goes better…

Hi. It’s a pleasure to meet you, too. :-) I do a lot of copyediting for Pyr. Are you a fan of the imprint in general?
It’s what I read for fun, mostly. I’m trying to specialize in proofing/ce’ing game rulebooks in my off-time.
I’d love to have a chance to say “They do bioaccumulate cesium, though.” Awesome.
What does it mean, to “bioaccumulate cesium”?
He mentioned the mushrooms around Chernobyl.
