I just received the following letter from Amelia Beamer’s family and thought I would pass it on:
Dear all,
Thank you for your help with the Arthur Jokela Memorial Fund. The whole family is overwhelmed and amazed by the show of generosity and sympathy from the science fiction community and all over the world, and it’s a great source of comfort. Because of you, we were able to cover funeral expenses within about a week of the tragedy. We hope eventually to turn the Arthur Jokela Memorial Fund into a source of grants and loans to support green technology and sustainable development in Africa.
Many of you never even had a chance to meet Arthur. The family has put together a website at http://arthurjokela.com with photos, an obituary, and the conference paper he gave in Malawi, a piece he was particularly proud of. It’s an example of the environmental and social causes Arthur dedicated his life’s work to, often with very little outside financial support; what he called “the improvement of the species.”
