My son turned four today, and I’m amazed at how much he’s grown up, even in the last few weeks. I conducted a birthday interview with him over a period of several days, because his body is as physically active as his imagination is mentally!
And no, I didn’t make any of this up. To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure I could.
Evan, what is your favorite thing right now?
Superhero toys!
Oh? What do you like about superheroes?
They have powers!
I have powers, you know….I can turn into a bear.
Really? My….
Yes. A robot bear. And I even can turn into a bumblebee and all kinds of stuff. Lots of robots.
So you can turn into a robot bumblebee? What do you do as a robot bumblebee?
Well, there’s this gate that you open, and you push this red button, and you go up to the moon, in outer space. And there are these windows. You close the windows so you don’t see the planets. Because planets are very big. And scary.
…So you can turn into a robot bumblebee spaceship?
Uh-huh!
My. Well…Those are some pretty cool superpowers! So…hm. What do you think about girls?
They kiss me a lot.
Oh, really?
Yes. Morning and night, morning and night, morning and night, morning and night, morning and night, morning and–
Well, where do all the girls come from?
They parachute out of the sky, and they think I is Jesse McCartney, and them run around and say “Aaaaaa!” and them hide under my bed!
What? Does Mommy need to go check for girls under your bed?
Uh-huh! You need to! Because those girls are still there!
Well, what are they doing under your bed?
I don’t know!
Hm. Well, Evan, if you could have one thing in the whole wide world, what would it be?
You. [And he gives me a big hug and kiss]
Awwww. :-) I’m a happy mommy.
Man, I wish I could turn into a robot bumblebee spaceship…
LOL. I wish I could turn into a robot bumblebee spaceship too. Man, what superpowers!
What a cutey!
They parachute out of the sky, and they think I is Jesse McCartney, and them run around and say “Aaaaaa!†and them hide under my bed!
Yep, that’s pretty much my experience with ’em.
Good lad. He’ll do okay.
Oh, that GRIN! He is SO precious! He’s definitely going to be a ladies’ man! And … what a cake! LOLOL …. looks so good one can dive right in with the hands and smear it all over the face! Perfect for his age!
I laughed and laughed and then called my husband in and read Evan’s interview to him.
That is so cute. Evan, Happy Birthday. You are such a bright little boy. You make your mommy and everyone proud.

LOL! How wonderful!
That’s awesome! I’m so going to start doing these with my kids.
And wow, what a great cake!
Thanks, all. Yes, he’s darling, and his imagination is incredible! He has me tell him monster stories every night right now, where he is always the hero. :-)
He’d asked for a cherry cake for his birthday. I wasn’t sure how to go about one, so I went ahead and made a Black Magic cake, then whipped up a pint of cream with powdered sugar to spread in the middle, covered that with a can of cherry pie filling, then did the same for the top. It did come out pretty yummy. :-)
I laughed so hard that my husband wanted to know what was so funny. “An exit interview with a four-year-old,” I said. He made a who-the-hell-would-subject-a-four-year-old-to-an-interview face, so I explained. “Let me read it to you,” I said; “it’s incredibly funny.” “Okay,” he said, “but I’m warning you, I’m not really in a laughing mood right now.” Needless to say, by the time I’d got to the robot bumblebee spaceship, he was laughing so loudly I was afraid he’d wake up our four-year-old.
Especially at the part about the girls. (Our daughter has a self-declared boyfriend at daycare. They are going to get married when they grow up, so she says, and be a mommy and a daddy. But he is not allowed to kiss her, because that’s icky. Girlfriends can kiss boyfriends, but boyfriends can’t kiss girlfriends. Why? Because that’s the rules.)
I love it! I want to turn into a robot bumblebee spaceship and have girls hiding under my bed!
My birthday’s coming up at the end of the month…I should make that cake!
Wow. My own imagination is striking me as horribly mundane at the moment.
